Siena is the embodiment of a medieval metropolis. Its inhabitants pursued their rivalry with Florence proper into the world of city planning. Throughout the centuries, they preserved their metropolis’s Gothic look, acquired between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries. During this era the work of Duccio, the Lorenzetti brothers and Simone Martini was to affect the course of Italian and, extra broadly, European artwork. The entire metropolis of Siena, constructed across the Piazza del Campo, was devised as a murals that blends into the encompassing panorama.
